Is wireless charging safe?

Share Article

In today’s fast-paced world, wireless charging has emerged as a staple of our technology-driven lives. The ease of recharging devices, from our smartphones to electric vehicles, by simply placing them on a pad is a modern luxury. Yet, as with many advancements in technology, there are potential health implications that accompany this convenience. One such concern is the exposure to electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation.

EMF radiation is a byproduct of numerous devices, including wireless chargers. The concept of wireless charging is rooted in the theories proposed by Nikola Tesla in the late 1800s, but today’s wireless charging operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction. A charging station or transmitter creates a magnetic field, which the receiver in the device intercepts, transforming it back into electrical energy.

The critical question we face is, “Does wireless charging pose a health risk?” The response is complex. While wireless chargers do emit EMF radiation, which has been linked to potential harm to the human body, the scope of this radiation is relatively limited. Moreover, most wireless chargers are only active when a device is in contact with them. This implies that the EMF radiation decreases significantly with distance, reducing the risk of exposure.

However, as technology advances, so do potential hazards. Emerging wireless charging technologies could potentially pose greater risks. For example, some technologies under development aim to charge devices over larger distances. This could result in all devices in a room charging simultaneously, regardless of their position, potentially escalating EMF exposure. Furthermore, there are 2 reasons we need to be cautious: a) there is a need for more data to be published on this topic, and b) current guidelines as specified by research bodies such as the FCC tend to be outdated and won’t fully reflect our increasing risk to exposure.

One such technology is WattUp, a brainchild of a California-based startup, Energous. Unlike conventional wireless chargers that utilize a magnetic field, WattUp employs Radio Frequency packets to transmit power from a transmitter to a receiver. This technology can charge a device up to 15 feet away from the transmitter, and it tracks the devices and directs power to them. While this technology is groundbreaking and convenient, it also raises concerns about increased EMF exposure.

So, what implications does this have for us as technology users and consumers? It implies that while we relish the convenience of wireless charging, we should also be cognizant of the potential risks. Here are some precautionary measures to consider:

  1. Distance: Maintain a safe distance from your device while it’s charging. The intensity of EMF radiation diminishes rapidly with distance.
  2. Time: Minimize the duration you spend near a wireless charger. The shorter the time you spend near the EMF radiation source, the lower your exposure.
  3. Awareness: Keep abreast of the latest research and advancements in wireless charging technology and EMF radiation.
  4. Protection: Consider using EMF neutralizing products, which can help mitigate your exposure to EMF radiation.

How EMF Radiation Impacts Athletic Performance

As an athlete, you’ve probably analyzed several aspects of your life and routine to optimize your performance. You may have started a regimented diet to eat more macro- and micro-nutrients to energize your body on and off the field. You may have taken more supplements or reduced your intake of alcohol to make sure you’re more hydrated. You may have taken ice baths to improve muscle inflammation and help with recovery.

However, you may be ignoring an aspect of your routine that inadvertently affects your performance — something more nefarious and hidden than you realize: EMF radiation.
